jeff gordon not as hated as we think - 2007/05/16 22:28 Gordon not as hated as it seems?
Published May 14th, 2007 in NASCAR

Less than two weeks after the Aaron’s 499 in Talladega, images of fans throwing beer cans at Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 Chevrolet are still fresh. The incident occurred during a post-race victory lap as Gordon, who passed the late Dale Earnhardt on the career wins list, paid tribute to the Intimidator by waving the No. 3 flag from his window.

That type of reaction is nothing new to Gordon. There are seemingly as many fans of the Rainbow Warrior as there are haters. The traditionally pro-Earnhardt crowds at Darlington would seem to offer Gordon little relief this week either. That might not be the case, however.

While Gordon has detractors at the Lady in Black, the overall sentiment toward him appears to have softened somewhat. And some of them are even Earnhardt fans.

“I don’t hate Jeff Gordon at all,” Justin Higgins, an Earnhardt fan from Lugoff said. “In fact, I’ve got a lot of respect for him. I think he’s a good driver. “What happened at Talladega was very disrespectful. (Gordon) had the Earnhardt flag with him after he won, and that showed a lot of class and respect.”

Walking around the infield at Darlington, a lot of campers fly the colors of Earnhardt and son, but Gordon is well-represented also. “I started following him when he first started driving and have just been a fan ever since,” Dan Dkas of Bradford, Pa., said.
Dan Dkas also stated that it was Dale Sr. who gave Gordon his first break and who showed Gordon how to race and if my memory serves me right, wasn,t Gordon and Sr. buiessness partners also, the fans need to know that records are ment to be broken, and that is what Gordon has done, and he is set to break another here soon when he hits the win #84 and right now he is at #78.

Re:jeff gordon not as hated as we think - 2007/05/17 06:52 Yeah it's not so much, the NASCAR community as it is the fans at Dega, I've been there plenty of times and it seems like in comparison to other race tracks, the drunk, no teeth, can thrower, Gordon fans are not welcomed here attitude seems to be more accepted. Not to say there are not fans like that at other race tracks, but it is not nearly as prevolent at the other race tracks.
