Roush Says Toyota Team Stole "Proprietary Part": ESPN the Magazine has an interesting and potentially explosive quote from Roush Fenway Racing co-owner Jack Roush as part of its 10th Anniversary issue, which is on newsstands this week. Two weeks ago at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the magazine quotes Roush as saying, “We had a proprietary Roush Fenway part go missing from one of my race teams, and we recovered it from a Toyota team. I’m not going to say which team it is, but we are considering legal action, or getting NASCAR involved.” If Roush’s allegations prove to be true, this could become NASCAR’s version of the recent spy scandal that rocked Formula One racing, in which the McLaren-Mercedes team was caught with confidential, proprietary test information belonging to rival Ferrari. We contacted Roush Fenway Racing today in search of further information – including team was involved and the specific part in question -- and we [SIRIUS Speedway w/ Dave Moody] hope to have a statement from them later today.(Motorsports Soapbox)(3-25-2008) Comment here

UPDATE: Jack Roush, co-owner of Ford-based Roush Fenway Racing, leveled another serious accusation at nemesis Toyota at Atlanta Motor Speedway -- one that took nearly three weeks to surface. No one from either RFR or Toyota was willing to comment on Tuesday, but no one was denying Roush told a reporter from ESPN The Magazine on March 7 that a Toyota team had been in possession of an RFR team part.(ESPN)(3-26-2008)
UPDATE 2: Toyota officials on Wednesday identified the Roush Fenway Racing part that owner Jack Roush said was found in a Toyota team's possession during a Sprint Cup post-race teardown as a spring. Jim Aust, the president and chief executive officer of Toyota Racing Development, said once the part was found to belong to RFR that it was returned. He was uncertain how the part, discovered on a table with other Toyota parts, got there or from which team it came. "I don't understand the whole procedure when a teardown happens," said Aust, referring to a post-race process in which several cars are broken down by NASCAR inspectors. "The only thing I know is it wound up with parts we had and [which were] returned to Roush. "It's unfortunate it happened the way it did. It wasn't anything intentional. There's no reason to be done intentional. I have no idea how it happened to begin with." Roush Fenway president Geoff Smith said the part in question was not a spring, but he would not elaborate. No one at RFR has identified which Toyota team had the part. Laughter is the best medicine
Let us now bring in the judge. He goes by the name of Jeff Gordon, driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet of Hendrick Motorsports. So he doesn't have a dog in the hunt. He's not in the Ford camp, nor from the Toyota side.
And he can't stop laughing.
"I think the whole thing is just hilarious. I think it's a great story," Gordon said. "Certainly we've been talking about it. I'm sure it's making for some good entertainment around the garage area and in the media center. But I really hope Jack is not taking it that seriously, because he shouldn't. It really is something to smile about.
"If he's really that upset about it, I want to know what's going on with that swaybar, man. Maybe there's something that we're missing that has to do with how fast their cars are. A lot of us have a little bit different of a design on the swaybars. Once you start getting into the really big swaybars, trying to figure out how to lighten 'em up is definitely important. I don't know. Maybe they figured out something on that design that they didn't want to get out of their garage. But then I guess you shouldn't leave it laying around where somebody can grab it."
Gordon went on to say that he talked to his crew members about how parts sometimes inadvertently end up in the wrong hands -- and ultimately places -- after the chaos of a post-race teardown.
"They said you'd be surprised," Gordon said. "You're cleaning up and in post-race inspection, stuff gets left laying around. You can take it, you can not take it. You can tell a NASCAR official it's just laying here or whatever. It happens all the time. I think if no one claims it, I think it's kind of yours. The difference here is that Roush wanted it back. Well, he got it back."
When pressed for how he really thought, though, Gordon admitted he had another thought.
"I think we should investigate more. I think we should get the FBI involved," Gordon said.
He was laughing as he said it.
Roush needs to laugh a little more, too, and worry a little less about intellectual espionage, setting up clandestine meetings, and restraining orders. Then and only then will he be able to concentrate on the really important things, like optimizing the torsional effect on his racecars.
Just don't let your kids catch it.

You know Jack is starting to get on my nerves with this. He just needs to drop the subject because there is nothing he can do to get his driver's Crew Cheif back and realize that one of his teams made a mistake and with having a part end up in a Toyota Teams hands. Stop being a big baby Jack.

What is the use of him trying to point the finger at someone when it is useless right now. Plus, with the Toyota saying it came with their parts and it was returned. Roush Fenway Racing doesn't plan any legal action against MWR: Roush Fenway Racing doesn't plan to take legal action against Michael Waltrip Racing for what it characterized as the theft of a sway bar unless there is evidence that the piece has been duplicated. Team president Geoff Smith said the issue would not have surfaced at all had Toyota general manager Lee White not insinuated that Roush's team of Carl Edwards intentionally cheated at Las Vegas.(see full story at ESPN.com), so lets hope this whole thing is over.(3-30-2008) Comment here

why is it every time there is a problem in nascar jack roush is never too far behind , now all he keeps hollering about is a stolen part heck i remember a few years ago he was accusing gordon of cheating , i gotta go with the rest of yall on here jack needs to shut up and give it a rest, oh and by the way i think it was gdawg who told me once before roush had to cut a team from his stable next year so whos its gonna be? im guessing either biffle or mcmurray, and im also saying that whichever of the roushkateers gets cut may be the driver of the 33 car for RCR in 09 anyways looking forward to seeing the response on this one, later all

I'm gonna have to say McMurray on the cut. Biffle is to much of an asset to Roush-Fenway Racing. But I honestly don't think RCR would pick up McMurray. I'm still trying to figure out why McMurray still has such a high profile among NASCAR fans. He's not that great. I bet David Ragan has a better average finish than McMurray.

Im right there with ya Moonpie.. If you dont like Toyota being in NASCAR then see ya buddy. Dont let the door hit ya on the way out. Then dont watch NASCAR anymore if that is how you feel. There was foreign cars in NASCAR before you were even born my friend. Like Honcho said they are here to say. So you can either live with it, start getting used to them being here, or stop watching the sport and dragging the fans down that do like Toyota being here.

Roush has always made little problems into big problems. As for Toyota them coming into nascar was great for the sport. Atleast I think so. And yes I don't mind Jack Roush but he's taking this to far. Just like the Jet's did with the Pat's spygate.

Second, if you're turned off by NASCAR then get off this site because guess what, it's about NASCAR. Like Honcho said, get used to them being in the sport because they aren't going any where fast. At first I was against Toyota but here's a little fun fact for ya M2M. Toyota produces more vehicles in America than Chevy, Ford, and Dodge. Hell, so does Honda.
